The Scottish Heritage Society (SHS) of the Rochester Area is proud to offer a unique opportunity for a final resting place in historic and beautiful Mt. Hope Cemetery in Rochester, NY.
Located at the corner of Evergreen and Forest Streets, the New Scottish Burial Plot was purchased on behalf of the Rochester Scottish Society in 1888 by John Stewart, with funds provided by Angus MacDonald. As time passed, the existence of the plot was largely forgotten by the Scottish community. Because of inactivity, the New Scottish Burial Plot became subject to reclaim by Mount Hope Cemetery. However, in 2014, due to the diligent research of former board member Elsie Cleary, the Scottish Heritage Society assumed Trusteeship of the New Scottish Burial Plot with the right to approve burials.
If you are a first, second, or third generation Scot and a resident of Upstate New York, for a modest application fee of only $100, you can purchase a gravesite in the New Scottish Burial Plot — a savings of several thousand dollars. The $100 fee goes towards providing markers for Scots buried in unmarked graves in the cemetery.
As of early 2023, there are 18 available gravesites in the New Scottish Burial Plot. In keeping with the original intent, preference is given to SHS members, but SHS membership is not required.
Learn more by clicking on, filling out, and sending in an SHS Gravesite Application. A SHS board member will contact you within 30 days. Thank you!
